Complete Collagen Induction Therapy Guide: Before & After

SkinPen microneedling tool on womans face

Collagen induction therapy, also known as microneedling, is a versatile aesthetic treatment that boosts collagen production to address a wide array of cosmetic concerns. It is one of the most popular treatments at NP Empowered Wellness in Roseville, California. Read on to learn more

First, What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is an innovative skin treatment designed to enhance the overall texture and appearance of your skin. 2. Utilizing a specialized pen-like device equipped with vibrating needles, this procedure creates micro-wounds in the epidermis. These controlled punctures stimulate the skin’s natural healing process, triggering the production of new collagen and skin cells, which are vital for a youthful and radiant complexion.

The benefits of microneedling are numerous. It is particularly effective for addressing mild acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and minor volume loss. As the skin heals, it becomes firmer and smoother, leading to a revitalized and glowing appearance. This minimally invasive treatment not only improves the skin’s texture but also promotes long-lasting results.

At NP Empowered Wellness, we prioritize your unique skin needs and provide a professional environment where you can feel comfortable exploring your skincare options. Say goodbye to tired skin and embrace the rejuvenating effects of microneedling to achieve a healthier, brighter look.

What You Should Avoid Before Microneedling

NSAIDs

You should avoid NSAIDs in the week leading up to your microneedling treatment session. Bruising is caused by internal bleeding and NSAIDs thin the blood, making internal bleeding more likely to occur. To mitigate the risk of bruising after your microneedling treatment session, do not take any NSAIDs during the seven days before your session; if you feel pain, soreness or discomfort, take acetaminophen.

You should also avoid taking other drugs or nutritional supplements that are intended to thin the blood or may cause the side effect of blood-thinning. For example, you should avoid taking MAOIs if your psychiatrist advises you that it is safe to not take them for 72 hours before your session and several days after your session. Furthermore, you should avoid taking such nutritional supplements as vitamin E, fish oil, turmeric and ginger.

Accutane and Other Drugs and Supplements

Accutane is one of the most common acne medications on the market. Unfortunately, its active ingredient, isotretinoin, is a retinoid. If you currently take this medication, it is crucial to consult your primary care physician regarding the possibility of discontinuing it. Additionally, explore alternative treatments that will not interfere with your collagen induction therapy (CIT). It is important to refrain from taking Accutane within six months prior to beginning CIT.

Moreover, you should avoid other medications, particularly topical acne treatments that contain retinoids. This also includes refraining from oral vitamin A1 (retinol) supplements. We will provide you with a comprehensive list of drugs and supplements to avoid during your initial consultation, once we have determined that collagen induction therapy is suitable for your needs.

Certain Hair Removal Methods

Shaving the treatment area in the week before your scheduled session is fine. However, you should not use alternative hair removal methods, such as electrolysis, hair removal creams, laser hair removal or waxing. Such hair removal methods increase skin sensitivity. Plan to not use such hair removal methods until eight days after your session.

Furthermore, you should avoid shaving the treatment area on the day of your session. Whether you shave the night before your session is up to you, however shaving on the day of your treatment may cause skin irritation. If you choose to shave the treatment area the night before your session, make sure the blades of your razor are sharp, you use shaving cream and you moisturize your skin afterward. You don’t want skin irritation the day of your session.

Heat-Based Cosmetic Treatments and Others

For two weeks before your microneedling treatment session, it is crucial to refrain from cosmetic procedures that could irritate your skin. Treatments such as IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy and laser treatments heighten skin sensitivity and should be avoided. During your initial consultation, we will provide a detailed list of treatments to avoid in the 14 days prior to your session, as well as the first seven days following it.

Additionally, please steer clear of physical exfoliation, which may further irritate your skin before treatment, and chemical peels. The latter should be avoided in the two weeks leading up to your microneedling session, as they can aggravate your skin and often contain vitamin A derivatives. Your adherence to these guidelines is essential for optimal results from your treatment.

UV Damage

Do your best to avoid UV damage in the week leading up to your session. Avoiding tanning beds is only one step you should take in protecting your skin. Additionally, mitigate your risk of sunburn by wearing at least an SPF 30 broad-spectrum sunscreen that has not expired, and remember to reapply it every four hours. Limiting your time spent outdoors between 10 AM and 4 PM, and wearing a hat when outside, can also help minimize the effects of sun exposure. Taking these precautions will ensure your skin is in the best condition for your upcoming treatment.

Cold Sores

If you have a history of cold sores, take an antiviral 48 hours prior to your treatment and the day of your session. If you forget to take an antiviral two days before your session and you have a cold sore at the treatment site on the day of your session, you will have to reschedule your appointment.

Makeup and Other Cosmestics

On the day of your treatment, do not apply any makeup, lotion or sunscreen to the treatment area. If you’re targeting your face, wash your face with a gentle facial cleanser before you come in for your appointment. If you are targeting your body, wash with a gentle soap that will not irritate your skin. The day of your treatment is not the appropriate time to experiment with a new soap with chemicals you may be allergic or sensitive to.

What You Should Avoid After Collagen Induction Therapy

NSAIDs

In the week following your microneedling treatment session, avoid taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Inflammation is a crucial part of the skin healing process and taking NSAIDs will slow the rate at which your skin heals. Furthermore, as stated previously, NSAIDs thin the blood, and you’ll want to avoid this in the first seven days following your microneedling treatment session.

Vitamin Serums or skin active ingredients

Although vitamin serums are commonly used topically, they have a potential role in inciting dermal granulomatous reactions.1. Wait one week before use.

Picking Your Skin

It is essential to refrain from picking at your skin during the week following your treatment session. Typically, between three and five days after the procedure, you may notice your skin becoming dry and starting to peel. The urge to “speed along” this peeling process by manually removing the dead skin or applying physical exfoliants should be resisted. Engaging in these actions may not only hinder your skin’s healing process but could also increase the risk of complications, such as infections or acne outbreaks.

Touching peeling skin can introduce bacteria from your fingertips, which may lead to irritation of the treated areas on your face. If you find it challenging to avoid touching your face, consider wearing gloves to minimize contact. Additionally, for those who underwent treatment on their cheeks or chin, wearing a mask can further protect the area from unintentional touching. Prioritizing your skin's healing will ultimately lead to better long-term results and a healthier complexion.

Over-Moisturizing Your Skin

Avoiding excessive moisture during the natural peeling process is crucial for optimal recovery and results from your collagen induction therapy. Over-moisturizing can prolong peeling, hindering the appearance of your skin's improvement. Balance is essential; while you should refrain from over-application, your skin must also remain hydrated.

For those with oily or normal skin, applying a gentle facial moisturizer once daily is advisable. Morning application can ensure your skin feels comfortable and hydrated throughout the day. Alternatively, individuals with naturally dry skin should aim to moisturize twice daily to maintain adequate hydration levels.

Choose gentle moisturizers that minimize irritation, such as Aquaphor, Cetaphil, or Vaseline. Adhering to this regimen will support your skin’s healing process while promoting the best possible outcomes from your treatment.gAvoiding excessive moisture during the natural peeling process is crucial for optimal recovery and results from your collagen induction therapy. Sweating

To ensure optimal healing after your microneedling treatment, it is essential to avoid sweating during the first three days. Please refrain from taking steaming-hot showers or baths, and avoid jacuzzis, saunas, and steam rooms. It is also important to stay away from strenuous exercises, including heavy weight lifting, swimming, intense spinning, or indoor rowing. If your job requires significant physical exertion and sweating, consider taking three days off to allow your skin to recover properly.

Cosmetics

Do not use the cosmetics you usually incorporate into your daily routine for the first five to seven days after your treatment. If you can’t go a week without wearing makeup, try to go without wearing makeup until your skin starts to peel. Once your skin starts to peel, it is okay to wear mineral makeup. Once your skin finishes peeling, you may resume wearing your favorite cosmetics.

Ice

You should not apply ice to the treatment area or use it near the treatment area. Ice will impede the natural inflammatory process that your skin needs for healing. For the same reason, you should avoid herbal supplements used to fight inflammation, such as arnica supplements and bromelain (derived from pineapples). You should also avoid drinking pineapple juice and eating pineapples during the first week after treatment to prevent consuming excessive bromelain. This careful approach ensures optimal healing and recovery following your treatment.

Avoid Sleeping On Your Stomach or Side

First, change your pillow case to clean fresh one. If you received collagen induction therapy treatment on your face, it is crucial to avoid sleeping on your stomach or side for the first week following your session. Instead, you should sleep on your back with your head elevated to ensure optimal healing.

If you are not accustomed to sleeping on your back, practice this position for a couple of weeks prior to your treatment to enhance your comfort and ensure adequate rest. Should you find that you typically toss and turn during sleep, consider utilizing a recliner for added stability. Alternatively, if a recliner is unavailable, position pillows or rolled bath towels on either side of you to prevent rolling during the night.

Following these guidelines will help facilitate your recovery and maximize the benefits of your collagen induction therapy.

Alcohol

Do not consume alcohol in the seven days following your treatment. Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it has dehydrating properties. Unfortunately, being dehydrated will slow your skin’s healing process drastically. Furthermore, a side effect of consuming diuretics, like alcohol, is essential micronutrients are flushed out of your body.

Tobacco

Just as you should avoid alcohol to not impede your skin’s healing process, you should avoid consuming tobacco products for approximately the first week following your collagen induction therapy session. Tobacco products contain dozens of chemical compounds, including nicotine. Such products, which will drastically impede your skin’s healing process, include cigarettes, chewing tobacco, most e-liquids and smoking cessation tools, like nicotine gum and patches.

If you smoke or chew tobacco regularly, you may struggle to go cold turkey and avoid consuming nicotine. You may go through physical withdrawals for 72 hours, but after that, any struggle to not consume nicotine is all mental. When you’re tempted to have a smoke or dip, just remember that both your cravings and the trigger for your cravings are only temporary. Go for a walk, eat a crunchy snack or play a mobile game. You will get through it.

What are GLP-1s?

GLP-1s (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 receptor agonists) are a class of medications that emulate the functions of a hormone known as GLP-1. This hormone is secreted by the intestines in response to food intake and is instrumental in managing blood glucose levels, regulating appetite, and facilitating digestion.

Other names for this medication class include:

  • Glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonists.

  • Incretin mimetics.

  • GLP-1 analogs.

These medications are relatively new. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first GLP-1 agonist (exenatide) in 2005. Researchers are still learning about their other potential uses and benefits.

The following are some commonly used GLP-1 medications:

  • Semaglutide (brand names: Wegovy, Ozempic)

  • Liraglutide (brand name: Saxenda)

  • Dulaglutide (brand name: Trulicity)

  • Trizepatide (brand name: Monjarno)

GLP-1 receptor agonists are a class of medications originally created for managing diabetes, which have since gained attention for their significant weight loss effects, leading to their approval for obesity treatment in specific circumstances.

How Do GLP-1s Work for Weight Loss?

1. Appetite Suppression by Slowing stomach emptying:
GLP-1s function by slowing gastric emptying, which prolongs the sensation of fullness after meals. This mechanism effectively reduces calorie intake by helping individuals resist the urge to overeat.

2. Hormonal Regulation:
These medications influence various hunger-regulating hormones within the brain, helping to minimize cravings and fostering a sense of satiety. This hormonal balance is crucial for effective weight management.

3. Increasing how full you feel after eating (satiety): GLP-1 affects areas of your brain that processes hunger and satiety.

4. Improved Metabolism:
By stabilizing blood sugar levels, GLP-1 receptor agonists enhance the body’s metabolism. This optimization supports fat loss, making it easier to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

GLP-1 receptor agonists are gaining recognition as a valuable tool in the management of obesity. By effectively suppressing appetite, they address one of the primary challenges of weight loss. Additionally, they play a crucial role in regulating hormones that influence hunger, contributing to a more balanced physiological response to food intake. Furthermore, improvements in metabolic function enhance the body's ability to process nutrients and maintain energy levels. Collectively, these attributes establish GLP-1 receptor agonists as a compelling option for individuals facing the complexities of obesity, offering a path toward sustainable weight management and improved overall health.

What are the potential benefits of GLP-1 agonists?

Studies show that GLP-1 agonists may have other potential benefits, like:

  • Decreasing body weight

  • Lowering blood pressure.

  • Decreasing blood sugar for diabetics

  • Improving lipid disorders.

  • Improving fatty liver disease.

  • Reducing your risk of heart disease and kidney disease.

Side Effects and Considerations

Common side effects of GLP-1s include:

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhea or constipation

  • Fatigue

Most side effects subside as your body adjusts to the medication. Staying hydrated and eating smaller meals can help mitigate these issues.

Who Can Benefit from GLP-1s?

GLP-1 medications may be recommended for:

  • Individuals with a BMI ≥30 (obese) or ≥27 with obesity-related health conditions.

  • Those who struggle to lose weight with lifestyle changes alone.

  • Patients with type 2 diabetes looking to improve weight and blood sugar control.

However, GLP-1s are not suitable for everyone. People with a history of certain thyroid conditions, pancreatitis, or specific allergies should avoid these medications. It’s essential to consult a healthcare provider to determine if GLP-1s are appropriate for you.

Combination with Lifestyle Is Still Key

It’s important to remember that the most effective management of involves several therapies, like:

  • Lifestyle and diet modifications.

  • Exercise.

  • Medications.

Together, you and your healthcare provider will determine a treatment plan that works best for you. Providers often prescribe GLP-1 agonists with other medications to achieve the best blood glucose management.

Conclusion

GLP-1 receptor agonists are revolutionizing the field of weight management, providing new hope for those facing obesity or weight-related health challenges.
